Sune Buch Segal

Often reaching into his anthropological toolbox, Sune has 18 years’ experience working at the nexus of communications and human rights-focused international development programming.

Having held managerial positions at several leading non-profit organisations he is passionate about making communications and fundraising work to further human rights and social justice.

Sune has experience collaborating with partners across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

He is particularly well-versed in the Middle East and North Africa, having lived in Damascus, Beirut, and Ramallah, and having overseen complex development programmes across the region.

 

Recent work

  • Communications adviser for the Global Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Partnership
    (GMEL), which helps UK’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund develop global MEL standards and frameworks
  • Worked with UK Aid Direct, DFID’s 150 m GBP fund supporting CSOs to deliver the Global Goals
  • Revamping all communications assets around the Danish AIDS Foundation’s international programmes
  • International Media Support, a Copenhagen- based NGO: Evaluated media development programmes designed to promote conflict-sensitive journalism and counter online disinformation in Iraq, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Developed proposal for new programme phase, which was subsequently funded by the Norwegian MoFA (2020)
  • For a consortium comprising IREX Europe (France); International Consulting Expertise (Belgium); and International. Media Support (Denmark): Led the development of a comprehensive media development programme proposal for EuropeAid. The proposal was awarded the highest rating among five competitors with regard to analysis, strategy, and methodology (2016)

Recent deployment

Early 2020, assignment for International Media Support: Evaluate impact and provide recommendations for the continuation of a media development programme designed to defuse ethno-religious tensions in Sri Lanka through conflict- sensitive journalism and media sector reform.

Late 2019, assignment for International Media Support: Evaluate project designed to enhance the quality and quantity of media coverage of religious minorities in Pakistan and Iraq. Write funding bid to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a continuation of the project. Based on the bid the ministry decided to fund a three-year extension of the programme.
