USA Fundraising

Fundraising in the USA

There are a range of mechanisms to raise money from the USA if you are not intending to establish your own US charity. These could be through, Intermediaries or US friends groups. If that is the way you wish to go then there are many organisations that can assist. CAF America could be a good place to start.

Abbey Solutions specialises in establishing independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organisations in the US. We also have a wealth of experience of both HNWI fundraising and raising money from charitable Foundations in the US.

Our services include:

Supporting you in establishing a US charity
Support in recruiting Trustees (who should mostly be US citizens)
Supporting you in working with a Law firm
In depth understanding of the tax system in relation to charitable giving
Fundraising action plan including developing a robust pipeline
Research foundations that have a focus on the work you are doing
Preparing case for support and funding bids
Recruitment of US fundraisers

What you should know

Any charity set up in the US is a totally autonomous organisation and should not be used as an instrument to raise money so it can be funnelled back to the UK.  In any event it is highly unlikely that donors will want to donate to a UK charity in this way.

Unless you are an NGO carrying out work in developing countries, or carrying out work that has significant global impact, (e.g. medical research) funds raised in the US will in most cases need to be used on projects in the US. In fact many foundations will want to see that the work your organisation is doing is in the same State as the Foundation.

Assuming all this has been thought through and you still want to establish an organisation in the States here are some interesting statistics.

The health of American Giving

Americans gave $373.25 billion in 2015. This reflects a 4.1% increase from 2014.1
Corporate giving in 2015 increased to $18.46 billion – a 3.9% increase from 2014.1
Foundation giving in 2015 increased to $57.19 billion – a 6.5% increase from 2014.1

There is a direct correlation between the level of giving and the rise of the stock market.

Info from the National Philanthropic Trust

It’s a lot of money, but keep in mind according to the National Centre for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there are more than 1.5 million non-profit organizations, so a lot of competition.
